I’ve been binging Star Trek Discovery over the past week. It’s in its fifth season which will also be its last. And in so many ways it has failed the fundamentals of not only what makes Star Trek endearing to many but as a TV show that is supposed to make you give a shit about what’s happening.

Spoiler Alert: I’m going to be talking liberally about Discovery up to mid-5th season. Haven’t watched that far? Then you may not want read on.

Non-Nerd Alert: Don’t like Star Trek? No worries. You don’t even need to care about Star Trek to grok what I’ll talk about below. Just insert “Big Bang Theory or “Show I wanted to be good” in place of Trek and you’ll be fine. Okay? Good. Let’s go.

It’s been a long time since new Star Trek has been on TV. After Enterprise finished its run in 2005, we didn’t get anything until 2017. That show, Discovery, was meant to bring Trek back and do some heavy lifting. Now as I watch the final season, I can certainly say that it failed in spectacular ways. And they were all self-inflicted.

For the sake of knowing WTF I’m talking about, I’m going to skip the original Star…
